Dowsing: All I Could Find Was You
Dowsing is the sort of band that you love or hate. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of in between. I like the energy and the imperfect vocals. Count Your Lucky Stars has a roster worth digging into (which is how I found these guys). Stream this EP, then maybe check out their other EP and LP: http://countyourluckystars.bandcamp.com/album/all-i-could-find-was-you
Owen: O, Evelyn
As usual, Polyvinyl does superb job with packaging. That’s expected though. Owen is so calm that they seem out of place in this list, but I guess it had to balance out somewhere. The B-side is a cover of “Girlfriend In a Coma” by The Smiths. It’s a cool rendition. “O, Evelyn” comes from this LP: http://owenmusic.bandcamp.com/album/ghost-town
The Swellers: Vehicle City Blues/Red Lights
It took longer for this band to grow on me than it should have. I owned some of their music, I’d seen them live - but it wasn’t until I was listening to this EP a few weeks ago that they grabbed my full attention. It’s a Side One Dummy release so you know it sounds good. You can stream the title track here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPrX5eXEpog
Superchunk: This Summer/Cruel Summer
Summer is coming to a close and it’s just something we’re all going to have to accept. But if you’re like me and aren’t quite ready to welcome sweatshirts back into your life, then Superchunk’s punk/pop sound will help stave it off. And how often do we get to hear Bananarama covers?
